Buffalo Lodge Cultural Society had its beginnings in August 2020 in a Treaty 7 collaboration called Iinii Moyis, or Buffalo Lodge in Blackfoot, a pilot 30-day Indigenous land-based addiction treatment program run by Enviros Wilderness School Association.
The young men who participated in Iinii Moyis spent the month of August reconnecting to their community and culture in the Ghost Wilderness area–in other words, coming home. They experienced innate healing of being close to the land and with culture and ceremony being integral to their journey. After seeing the progress of the participants on their 30-day journey, the elders, knowledge keepers and non-Indigenous staff involved in Iinii Moyis saw the potential for similar programming to help stem the ongoing loss of Indigenous youth to suicide and addiction. Together, they formed Buffalo Lodge Cultural Society in October 2020.
